Wall beds for homes in Morden
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Morden were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 84%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 5%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Morden, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Lawrence (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Old School House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 53% of households in the streets around Morden live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.
If you live near Cannon Hill Common, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your children go to Morden Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a period home close to St Lawrence Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Wall beds in Morden
Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall works hard. If you are living with a studio that works by day and night and shelves or a desk around the bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. Around Morden, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

How we price wall beds
What you pay depends on:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How big the furniture is
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- How many doors and drawers there are
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What we need to know
To help us picture the room, please include:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- We start with what the room is for, day and night.
- We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
- The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Before fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Why bespoke in Morden?
A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
The bed needs room in front of it to come down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.
What happens at the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
