How we make fitted wardrobes for KT4

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Most enquiries start with musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

Quotes in KT4

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bedroom storage across KT4

Across KT4, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

About 68% of the homes in KT4 went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 10% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 68% of homes in the KT4 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 38% of households in the KT4 postcode district live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in KT4 are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

North Cheam: Close to Nonsuch Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a flat near West Sutton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in awkward spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • A written quote that sets out the job

What it’s made from

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.

Plinths and scribe strips

Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from KT4

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
