Wall Beds in Surbiton Park

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Surbiton Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

Your questions about wall beds in Surbiton Park

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Surbiton Park?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Surbiton Park?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Wall beds in Surbiton Park: what you get

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that is used a few times a year takes most of the floor. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day for a desk, a hobby or just space. When guests come, the bed folds down. People typically come to us about a storage wall with a bed inside and more floor space in a studio flat, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Fitted furniture can suit each, sized and laid out for the room. Every wall in Surbiton Park homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.

Bedroom storage in Surbiton Park

In the streets around Surbiton Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Surbiton Park is within about a quarter of a mile of the Cadogan Road Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Surbiton Park fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to St John's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Church of St Raphael, less than half a mile north of the centre of Surbiton Park, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Surbiton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How we price wall beds

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The overall size of the piece

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

How fitting works for wall beds

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
