Wall beds in Hook

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bed that fills a little-used room and more floor space in a studio flat.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage usually goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Hook, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Is it time for wall beds?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A studio that works by day and night

Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

What to check before you book

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.

Why bespoke in Hook?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Why choose us

  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • 300+ projects completed

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • The internal fittings

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Common questions about wall beds

Can you make wall beds for a home in Hook?

Yes. Hook is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, that is a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that’s an office by day, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

What does a wall bed cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How fitting works for wall beds

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice

Hook homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hook were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the area around Hook (about 43%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

For an older house near St Paul's, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If your children go to St Paul's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
