Wall beds in Coombe
A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you do not need it and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, like a spare room that’s also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Coombe, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That’s where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch with some details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
- The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
- A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop.
- We fit the bed and storage in your home.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Starting with a design visit

Advice
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood gives a strong carcass around a moving bed.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a traditional finish that suits older homes.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Wall beds for homes in Coombe
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the area around Coombe, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Coombe, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Kingston upon Thames is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Coombe. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Coombe Conduit House, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Coombe, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a flat near Norbiton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Southside House, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

What affects the cost of wall beds
What you pay depends on:
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The internal fittings
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Your postcode and the borough
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Your questions about wall beds in Coombe
Is Coombe in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Coombe is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Coombe?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed by size, depth and weight. We’ll go through those limits at the design visit so you can choose one that works.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you use our contact form.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
