Under-Stairs Storage in Surbiton Park
In Surbiton Park, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
- The low end of the space going to waste
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Surbiton Park
Most people get in touch because the space has become a dumping ground. Things get pushed to the back, piled on top of each other and forgotten. Purpose-made drawers and shelves give everything its own place, so you can find what you need without emptying the cupboard.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
- The low end of the space going to waste
- A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
The wider area includes historic houses like Hampton Court Palace, about 1.4 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

About our under-stairs storage in Surbiton Park
In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and storage that doesn’t match the hallway.
In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. Whatever your home in Surbiton Park is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Surbiton Park
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Surbiton Park?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Surbiton Park?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How many days does the fitting take?
That depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We plan it once we’ve measured the room.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in as well as the room, so under-stairs cupboards arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Getting a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Related advice
Caring for painted furniture
People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. Should you have a question about the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we will help.
Closing drawers fully helps keep the runners and fronts in good order. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.
Pull-out drawers
A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. The design visit is where we agree the mix.
Storage in Surbiton Park homes: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around Surbiton Park, with about 20% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Surbiton Park is within about a quarter of a mile of the Cadogan Road Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 45% of households around Surbiton Park live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Kingston upon Thames as a whole, about 30%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
For a flat near Surbiton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Roman Catholic Church of St Raphael, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
