When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Wall beds in Berrylands: what you get
Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. If your home has shelves or a desk around the bed and a guest bed that disappears in the day, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Around Berrylands, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That is where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bedrooms in Berrylands: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Berrylands were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 68%) and before 1919 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Berrylands include Christ Church (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Kingston upon Thames is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Berrylands. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
If you live near Beverley Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hampton Court Palace, about 2.4 miles west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
How it’s made
Shelves
We can add shelving around the bed to make use of the whole wall.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits a cabinet you want to look crisp and is finished before it reaches you.
Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Berrylands station?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Berrylands?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits at the design visit so you can choose one that works.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How fitting works for wall beds
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and describe the room.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cabinet is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Do you need wall beds in Berrylands?
Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
- Room for a desk and a guest bed
- A storage wall with a bed inside
If you live in a flat close to Berrylands station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
