How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters. Then we talk through the seat height and storage.
  3. We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a quote in writing. Take your time with it.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

Window seats in Brimsdown: what you get

A window seat turns the light by a window into a place to sit. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. For a home in Brimsdown, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and talk through the design. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bay window that’s hard to furnish and needing more storage in the room.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Brimsdown, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about window seats

Does a conservation area in or near Brimsdown affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brimsdown station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you don’t need every day, while drawers are easier with a cushion on top.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How much does a window seat cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

What is a window seat made from?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. It can be matched to the window woodwork.

Lift-up lids

Lift-up lids are a simple way to add storage under a seat. You’ll need to move any cushion to open it, so it’s best for occasional storage.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Forty Hall, about 2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. Close to Lee Valley Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For an older house near Ss Peter and Paul Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square.
