Need window seats in Enfield Lock?

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How we make window seats for Enfield Lock

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. We will look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Enfield Lock. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a radiator under the window getting in the way and wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room.

A good part of the housing around Enfield Lock is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so it fits neatly at the walls and floor. A bench simply sits in front of the window. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels and radiator grilles. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It forms most of the visible parts.

Doors and drawer fronts

A radiator grille sits in the front of the seat, letting the heat reach the room. It is painted to match the other fronts. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.

Questions from Enfield Lock

Is Enfield Lock in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Enfield Lock is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Enfield Lock station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. We check all of this at the measuring visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that is work for your plumber.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Practical tips

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

In winter, windows can run with condensation, so keep the area behind the seat dry. A little ventilation helps keep things dry. Should you have a question about the seat, message us from the contact page and we’ll help.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, use our contact form and tell us.

Storage in Enfield Lock homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Enfield Lock, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Enfield Lock is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Enfield Lock (about 36%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many houses of that era have bay windows, natural places for a window seat, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath.

If you live in a period home close to Ss Peter and Paul Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. Forty Hall, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For families living near Prince of Wales Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

How fitting works for window seats

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
