Window seats in Enfield
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make window seats for homes in Enfield, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room

Window seats for homes in Enfield
Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Enfield is the same. Most enquiries start with unused space below a sash window and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. Around Enfield, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Common questions about window seats
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Enfield?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Enfield affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Is the cushion included with the window seat?
We make and fit the seat, but cushions aren’t something we supply. We plan the seat’s height and depth with a cushion in mind. You’ll have the seat size to hand.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How long will the window seat fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
The problems window seats solve
A window seat fits well with the sash windows and bays of many older houses. Painted to suit the room, it can sit with the original features. That appeals to people restoring or updating an older home.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
- An empty bay that does not get used
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
Close to Enfield Town Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch and describe the window.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
- We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.
Preparing the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice
Storage in Enfield homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Enfield were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and before 1919 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 53 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Enfield. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Enfield is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square. Near listed buildings like Church of St Andrew Enfield Parish Church, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Enfield, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Enfield is part of the London Borough of Enfield, about 2 miles south-east of Edmonton. We cover Enfield as part of our work across the rest of London, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Design visits and fitting in EN1, EN2 and N21 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street such as Lea Road, Farr Road and Cecil Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for window seats. Enfield sits close to the A110, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Neighbouring places we cover for window seats include Bush Hill Park (1 mile south-east), Bush Hill (1 mile south), Enfield Chase (1 mile west), Gordon Hill (1 mile north) and Forty Hill (1 mile north-east). We also make window seats in nearby places like Edmonton (2 miles south-east), Palmers Green (3 miles south-west), New Southgate (4 miles south-west), Upper Edmonton (3 miles south), Oakthorpe Park (3 miles south) and Arnos Grove (3 miles south-west).
Near you in Enfield
The streets we cover here include those near St Andrew's CofE Primary School, Kings Head pub and Grange Park Preparatory School and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Enfield itself: Enfield Town station. Nearby you will also find St Michaels Hospital (0.7 miles north) and Museum of Enfield (close by, under half a mile south).
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. It suits a seat that sees daily use.
Lift-up lids
Lids can be made in one piece or in sections. Sections are lighter to lift and easier to handle. The design visit is where we agree the layout.

What else we make in Enfield
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
