Wall beds for homes in Brimsdown

In the area around Brimsdown, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Brimsdown is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 25% of homes in the area around Brimsdown were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

The wider area includes historic houses like Forty Hall, about 2 miles west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. How we make wall beds for Brimsdown

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above, so the whole wall works hard. If your home has a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a bed that looks like cupboards by day, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Brimsdown is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Is it time for wall beds?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed

For an older house near Ss Peter and Paul Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • Supplying mattresses

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: wall beds in Brimsdown

Is parking a problem for fitting in Brimsdown?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Brimsdown?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What are your wall beds made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

We check that at the design visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and do not let children play with it.

Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we look at it when we measure.
