  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure

If you are having a cushion made, we will give you the exact size of the seat. Wait until the paint has cured before putting the cushion on, so the fabric does not stick or mark the finish.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, use our contact form and tell us.

About our window seats in Bushwood Area of Leytonstone

Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the lines and the finish match. It is worth talking through during the design visit in Bushwood Area of Leytonstone. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are an empty bay that doesn’t get used and a child’s room that needs storage and seating.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Bushwood Area of Leytonstone date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panelled fronts can echo the woodwork in a period room. The lines are kept neat and even.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. It can match the woodwork around the window.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Common questions about window seats

I live near Leytonstone High Road station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bushwood Area of Leytonstone?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the window, the storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, use our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Why choose us

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
