Window seats for your home in Higham Hill

Window seats in Higham Hill: what you get

Plenty of period homes across London have sash windows. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit your home in Higham Hill. If you are living with nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and a radiator under the window getting in the way, window seats made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so drawers, lift-up lids or shallow shelves are chosen to suit the space. Whatever kind of home you have in Higham Hill, the right answer depends on the depth and the height. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Higham Hill

Can you make window seats for a home in Higham Hill?

Yes, Higham Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Northumberland Park (London) station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The seat is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the room as tidy as we can while we work.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. We set the seat below the cill, so the sash still works. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you only want a simple bench under a straight window, an off-the-shelf piece may be enough. A bespoke seat earns its place where there’s a bay, a radiator or a need for storage. We’re happy to give an honest view at the design visit. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Tell us about parking near your home

How we price window seats

The price for your room depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge picks up marks first.

Use a step rather than standing on the seat. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. It will look better for longer with a little care.

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there’s a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It’s finished like the rest of the seat. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
