Fitted home offices in Enfield Lock
Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, shaped by the way you work. In Enfield Lock, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If your home has cables trailing across the desk and floor and shelves that sag under books and files, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
A good part of the housing around Enfield Lock is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic home office, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Home working in Enfield Lock: local notes
About 36% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Enfield Lock went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Enfield Lock is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Enfield is no exception. If your street in Enfield Lock is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.
If you live in a period home close to Ss Peter and Paul Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Close to Gunpowder Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. Forty Hall, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Questions from Enfield Lock
Is Enfield Lock in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes, Enfield Lock is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Enfield Lock station?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.
What it is made from
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Doors and panels are made from moisture-resistant MDF. It stays stable and gives a smooth base for paint. Either finish suits it.
Tips worth knowing
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
- Think about glare on your screen
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Note the position of sockets in the room
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. That way, you can start work straight away.
Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Spread heavy books and files evenly.
What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Home offices arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- First you tell us about the room and what your work needs, including the equipment you use.
- At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you. New sockets are for your electrician, so it is useful to think about them early.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office we’ve discussed.
- Your office furniture is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level, with cable routes left clear.
Before we arrive
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
