About our wall beds in Heath Park

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the design visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. Typical reasons to get in touch are a spare room that’s rarely slept in and a home office that also sleeps guests; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Heath Park, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bedrooms in Heath Park: local notes

About 48% of the homes in the streets around Heath Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Heath Park, Historic England’s list includes Frances Bardsley Lower School (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Heath Park. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Saint Alban Church of England, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your children go to Squirrels Heath Infant School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How fitting works for wall beds

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Common questions about wall beds

Do you cover homes near Gidea Park station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Heath Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

How much space does a wall bed need?

You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the design visit and plan the layout around it.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.

How are wall beds priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Do you need wall beds in Heath Park?

In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

If you live near Haynes Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
