Window Seats in Petersham
Planning window seats for a home in Petersham? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.
- Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
- Unused space below a sash window

Window seats for homes in Petersham
Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Petersham is the same. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a recess under the window doing nothing and an empty bay that doesn’t get used.
A Victorian or Edwardian terrace normally has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Petersham, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. That helps on a well-used seat.
Lift-up lids
Lids can be made in one piece or in sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. The design visit is where we agree the layout.
Petersham homes and window seats
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Petersham were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Petersham is partly covered by the Petersham Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Petersham is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.
Close to Marble Hill Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Petersham, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to The Russell Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
Petersham is about 2 miles west of Twickenham, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Petersham is part of that. Our Richmond upon Thames coverage includes Petersham, along with the rest of the borough.
Design visits and fitting in TW10 and TW1 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street such as Sandy Lane, River Lane and Arosa Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for window seats. Nearby, we also make window seats in Richmond (1 mile north), Ham (1 mile south), Eel Pie Island (1 mile west), St Margarets (1 mile north-west) and Strawberry Hill (1 mile south-west). We also make window seats in nearby places such as Teddington (2 miles south-west), Hampton (3 miles south-west), Barnes (3 miles north-east), Kew (3 miles north-east), Hanworth (3 miles west) and Mortlake (2 miles north-east).

When you need someone else
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
- Fixing the window itself
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.
What goes into it
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Radiator grilles
- Birch plywood
- Lift-up lids or drawers
Your questions about window seats in Petersham
Is parking a problem for fitting in Petersham?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you cover homes near St Margarets (London) station?
Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
Why bespoke in Petersham?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What you get with us

- Every quote follows a design visit

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Ask for a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
