About our fitted home offices in Petersham

Each home office is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits desks and long shelves, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Petersham. If you’re living with shelves that sag under books and files and a corner too odd for a standard desk, home offices made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A desk has to be level even when the floor is not, and in a house from before 1919 that means levelling and scribing at the base. Around Petersham, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so levelling is part of the plan from the first visit. Shelves above are scribed to the wall so the gaps stay even.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the home office designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What affects the price in Petersham

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Petersham homes and fitted home offices

About 48% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Petersham went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Petersham is partly covered by the Petersham Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. More than a third of the homes in the area around Petersham (about 48%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.

The wider area includes historic houses like Pembroke Lodge, about 0.5 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For a family home near The Russell Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Petersham

Can you fit furniture in a home close to St Margarets (London) station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Petersham is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How long will the home office fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

That is work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. It’s applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Do you need fitted home offices in Petersham?

Many spare rooms need to work as an office and a guest room. Fitted furniture can make room for both. It makes the most of a room that’s only sometimes used for guests.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Work things on show in the evening
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • A screen that’s hard to read by the window
  • Working at the kitchen table

Close to Marble Hill Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

What to check before you book

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
