Petersham Bespoke Kitchens
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Petersham, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A kitchen finished in your colours
- An island where space allows
- A kitchen for a room that isn’t square

About our bespoke kitchens in Petersham
We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about cabinets built around the appliances you choose and a dresser that suits a period house.
Around Petersham, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in many Victorian and Edwardian terraces the kitchen sits in a narrow back addition. Cabinets are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke kitchens in Petersham: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Petersham, with about 20% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Petersham is partly covered by the Petersham Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Petersham is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to St Margarets (London) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Pembroke Lodge, about 0.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
Petersham is about 2 miles west of Twickenham, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Homes in Petersham are part of the area we cover for bespoke kitchens, as part of our work in every London borough. Petersham is one of the places in Richmond upon Thames where we make bespoke kitchens.

Landmarks near Petersham
We fit furniture in homes around Grey Court School, St Catherine's School and The Fox and Duck pub, among other places. Petersham’s nearest station is St Margarets (London) station, about 0.9 miles north-west. A little further out are Eel Pie Island Museum (1 mile west) and South Middlesex Hospital (1.7 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Richmond Hill and Ham Lands.
Looking after your furniture
These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Choose your appliances before the design is final
- Measure the route into the kitchen
- Let us know how parking works on your street
- Give the paint time to cure fully
Don’t leave water sitting on painted cabinets, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.
Line up your other trades in good time. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.
Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Petersham?
Yes. Petersham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
I live near St Margarets (London) station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How long does fitting take?
It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Which worktops and appliances can I have?
The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Fitting day, step by step
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
- You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
- We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Preparing the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Advice
Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Petersham
Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, leaving gaps at the ends and above. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
- A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
- A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
- A kitchen for a room that is not square
If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
What to check before you book
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Why bespoke in Petersham?
Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so the room has to fit the units. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes from wall to wall. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
