Built-in Bookshelves in Petersham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Petersham starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy

Need built-in bookshelves in Petersham?

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Petersham

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. If you are living with low shelves children can reach and shelving behind a desk for books and files, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Petersham went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Petersham

My home in Petersham is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

I live near St Margarets (London) station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type, into sound brick or studs. Where a wall can’t take the load, we will say so and suggest another approach.

How do I get started?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a quote in writing.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which may be too deep for paperbacks or too shallow for art books. Bespoke shelving can mix depths. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, use our contact form.

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Room for a record collection

For a family home near The Russell Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How we price built-in bookshelves

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Living-room carpentry in Petersham: local notes

In the streets around Petersham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Petersham, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Petersham is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Pembroke Lodge, about 0.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Petersham, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
