Puddle Dock Window Seats

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make window seats for homes in Puddle Dock, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Radiator grilles
  • Spray-painted finish

How we make window seats for Puddle Dock

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a radiator that makes the space hard to use and no comfortable place to sit in the light.

Around Puddle Dock, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window

We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You will know it all works as it should.

Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. A little care keeps it looking good.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A ready-made piece sits in the space rather than being part of it. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Fitted storage in Puddle Dock

About 80% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Puddle Dock went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 11% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Puddle Dock include Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 60% of households in the streets around Puddle Dock, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your home is one of the older houses near Moor Lane Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. For a family home near The James Oglethorpe Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Puddle Dock is within the London Borough of Havering, about 5 miles west of Romford. We design and make window seats for homes in Puddle Dock. Puddle Dock is one of the places in Havering where we make window seats, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Related advice

Do you need window seats in Puddle Dock?

In a period home, a window seat can suit the character of the room. Painted to suit the room, it can sit with the original features. It suits anyone who wants new furniture to sit well in a period room.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • Needing more storage in the room

If you live in a flat close to Upminster station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Your questions about window seats in Puddle Dock

Do you make window seats for homes in Puddle Dock?

Yes, we work across Havering, Puddle Dock included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do you cover homes near Upminster station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. We don’t repair sashes or cills.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

How much does a window seat cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. For a quote, use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
