Wall beds for homes in Puddle Dock

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 80% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Puddle Dock, with about 11% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Puddle Dock, Historic England’s list includes Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For an older house near Moor Lane Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your children go to The James Oglethorpe Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a flat close to Upminster station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Wall beds in Puddle Dock: what you get

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If your home has a storage wall with a bed inside and room for a desk and a guest bed, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A good part of the housing around Puddle Dock is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make wall beds for a home in Puddle Dock?

Yes, Puddle Dock is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Choosing a mattress for you
  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Advice on your lease

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Keep children away while the bed moves

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
