TV and media units in Puddle Dock
Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard isn’t a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. People usually come to us about a big screen that dominates the wall and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Puddle Dock, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Why bespoke in Puddle Dock?
TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind if you expect to upgrade. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Common questions about TV and media units
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Puddle Dock?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you cover homes near Upminster station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Puddle Dock?
Just use our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
The problems TV and media units solve
Open-plan living is another reason. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned and holds books and everyday things as well.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Nowhere good for speakers
- Standard units leaving gaps
- A cabinet that traps heat
- A big screen that dominates the wall
If your children go to The James Oglethorpe Primary School or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
From workshop to your room
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
Getting a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Puddle Dock homes and TV and media units
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Puddle Dock were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 80%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 11%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Puddle Dock include Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Havering is no exception. Where a street in Puddle Dock is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Moor Lane Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Upminster station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
