Built-in bookshelves in Puddle Dock
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Puddle Dock
Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Puddle Dock, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are shelving that frames a window and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Puddle Dock, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.
Before we arrive
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Ask for a quote

Advice
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
Keep a record of the colour. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.
How we price built-in bookshelves
Several things affect the price:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How big the furniture is
- The number of doors and drawers
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Before the design visit
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Your postcode and the borough
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
What it’s made from
Shelves
For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support. Shorter bays are another answer.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Puddle Dock?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
The wall is checked when we measure. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Puddle Dock
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 80% of the housing in the streets around Puddle Dock, with about 11% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Puddle Dock include Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Havering sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
For an older house near Moor Lane Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Upminster station? Then built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Puddle Dock?
Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different, and can include a desk or a window seat.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- A home library or study
- A bare wall above a doorway
If your children go to The James Oglethorpe Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
What to check before you book
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
