Puddle Dock Loft Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make loft storage for homes in Puddle Dock, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished

Need loft storage in Puddle Dock?

The problems loft storage solve

The most common reason is wasted space. Behind the knee walls, there is space nobody can reach. Built-in storage makes that space useful.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • A dormer that is not being used
  • A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised

For an older house near Moor Lane Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

What to check before you book

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

How we make loft storage for Puddle Dock

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. In Puddle Dock, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and a loft room with too many jobs.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Puddle Dock, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Puddle Dock in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. Puddle Dock is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We plan it during the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and go through the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The edges around handles are touched most.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. A little ventilation helps. It helps the storage stay in good condition.

Fitted storage in Puddle Dock

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 80% of the housing in the area around Puddle Dock, with about 11% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Puddle Dock, Historic England’s list includes Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Puddle Dock is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your children go to The James Oglethorpe Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. For a flat near Upminster station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

How we price loft storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, use our contact form.

Honest limits

Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
