Window seats for your home in Tolworth
Window seats for homes in Tolworth
In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. We measure every face and scribe the seat to follow them, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is a job that suits bespoke work, in Tolworth or anywhere else. Typical reasons to get in touch are needing more storage in the room and wanting a quiet place to read; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Tolworth, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why choose us
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Designed for the room you have
- Every quote follows a design visit
Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.
When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. If there is a radiator grille, we make sure the radiator is clear and the grille is in place. You will know it all works as it should.
Do not block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.
Common questions about window seats
I live near Tolworth station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Tolworth?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?
Often a mix works best. Drawers suit things you use often, and a lid suits bulky items. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We’ll suggest a layout at the design visit.
Which materials go into your window seats?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
