Berrylands Window Seats
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make window seats for homes in Berrylands, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay

How we make window seats for Berrylands
A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. We’ll look at your radiator at the design visit in Berrylands. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and a period room that needs furniture to suit it.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Berrylands, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

When is bespoke worth it?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
- At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- You receive a quote in writing for the seat we have discussed, for you to look over.
- Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.
Preparing the room
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Christ Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Close to Beverley Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. If your children go to Christ Church CofE Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Common questions about window seats
I live near Berrylands station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Berrylands?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
What we do not do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
- Fixing the window itself
- Electrical work around the seat
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Pull-out drawers
A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Around a radiator, the drawers are placed to leave room for the heat. The design visit settles the mix.
Lift-up lids
Lids can be made in one piece or in sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. We’ll discuss the options at the design visit.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf benches aren’t designed to sit over a radiator. Put in front of one, they can trap the heat. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
