Questions we are often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Tolworth?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Is Tolworth in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Tolworth is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
Not if it is planned with care. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
About our loft storage in Tolworth
Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the room’s height. We will plan it during the design visit in Tolworth. If you’re living with a loft room with too many jobs and unused space in a dormer, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Walls in houses from between the wars are usually straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around Tolworth is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Arranging a design visit
For a quote for loft storage in Tolworth, tell us about the room on our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.
Advice
What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How big the furniture is
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- How you want to use the space
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Storage in Tolworth homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tolworth were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 75%) and since 2000 (about 8%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 63% of households in the streets around Tolworth live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Tolworth is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Living in a block of flats near Tolworth station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Hogsmill LNR, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Fitznells Manor, about 2.5 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:
- Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
- Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
Keep the ventilation behind the eaves clear. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps keep the loft in good order.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, get in touch through our contact form and describe it.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawers, and its edge can be left visible or painted.
