Alcove units designed for your room

Flats, leases and landlords

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

About our alcove units in Acton Vale

Period alcoves are rarely square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, often all at once. Each unit is built in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If your home has old alcove cupboards that have seen better days and a place for a small desk, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around Acton Vale date from then. That gives full-height alcove units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Alcove units in Acton Vale: local notes

In the streets around Acton Vale, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Acton Vale. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 22% of households in the streets around Acton Vale, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

For a flat near Acton Central station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Near listed buildings like St Saviour's Church and Institute, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Acton Vale, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, and we find a time for the design visit.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Common questions about alcove units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Acton Vale?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

My home in Acton Vale is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can the two alcove units be different?

That is your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but many people put a desk or a TV in one alcove and cupboards in the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there is damp on the breast already, it’s best sorted before fitting.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Scribed side panels

Do you need alcove units in Acton Vale?

A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. Built into the alcove, a cupboard holds clothes without taking over the room, which helps in a small bedroom.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • A desk that tucks into an alcove
  • Furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove

If your home is one of the older houses near St Saviour's Centre for the Deaf, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
