Under-stairs storage for your home in Acton Vale
Under-stairs storage in Acton Vale: what you get
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Acton Vale. If you’re living with a low corner too deep to reach into and coats and shoes piling up in the hall, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Acton Vale, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- It starts with a few details from you about the space.
- We come to measure and go through the design.
- We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
- New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.
Preparing the room
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Making use of awkward spaces in Acton Vale
In the streets around Acton Vale, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Acton Vale. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Around Acton Vale, about 49% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
Close to Wormholt Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near Acton Central station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as St Saviour's Church and Institute, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How we price under-stairs storage
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- The internal fittings
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What we need to know
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.
What it is made from
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.
Questions from Acton Vale
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you cover homes near Acton Central station?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
What is under-stairs storage made from?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Why bespoke in Acton Vale?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Ready-made units leave gaps that need filler pieces. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What we don’t do

- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
