Our alcove units across Ealing

We work across London, including Ealing. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. After that we send a written quote; the units are then built in our workshop and fitted in your home. Most enquiries start with clutter with nowhere to go and space for a growing book collection, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. Parking is worth mentioning too, since a van often needs a permit or a paid bay in London.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

How our quotes work

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Alcove units across Ealing: local notes

Shelves for books, cupboards for clutter and a place for the TV: that’s what most living-room enquiries from Ealing come down to. Alcove units can do all three in one design, made in our workshop and fitted on the days set out in your quote.

The biggest shares of homes in Ealing were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in Ealing (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where alcove units go. Of the 19 places we have local pages for in Ealing, 4 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Ealing: For an older house near St Saviour's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Living in a block of flats near Ealing Broadway station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Why people ask for alcove units in Ealing

In bedrooms, the alcoves may be the only place for hanging space. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor, which helps in a small bedroom.

Here’s what alcove units can help with:

  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. It can be set to line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there’s less painting to do in your home, in the colour agreed with you. Treat the units gently while the paint cures fully.

What affects the cost of alcove units

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Common questions about alcove units

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

How tall should alcove units be?

That is your choice. Full-height units give the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We’ll go through what suits your room when we visit.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You will get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards, or matching desks in both. The desk is planned around the way you work.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Which boards do you build with?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
