Need alcove units in Northolt?
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Alcove units in Northolt: what you get
Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that look as though they belong there. If your home in Northolt has alcoves like these, each alcove gets a unit designed for it. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep books and records and worn or badly fitted alcove units, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Northolt, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for alcove units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the measuring visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Built-in living-room furniture in Northolt
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Northolt, with about 28% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Northolt is within about a quarter of a mile of the Northolt Village Green Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 28% of homes in the area around Northolt were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of alcove units is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.
Living in a block of flats near Northolt Park station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Northolt Manor, about 0.3 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, less than half a mile south of the centre of Northolt, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How it is made
Shelves
Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. It’s easy to touch up later, and it gives a softer, traditional look.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, and we find a time for the design visit.
- We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
- The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that’s what you chose.
- The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.
Before fitting day
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

FAQs: alcove units in Northolt
Do you make alcove units for homes in Northolt?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London, and Northolt is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
I live near Northolt Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
How much will my alcove unit cost?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
What paint finish can I have on alcove units?
You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?
Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
Alcoves vary in depth, and the chimney breast decides how far a unit can come out. Standard cabinets can stand proud of the breast or sit too far back. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
- Mention parking and access when we visit
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in. Air moving through the chimney helps keep damp away, which protects the units too.
If a damp patch appears near a unit, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.
