Fitted wardrobes across W3: what to expect
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and not enough hanging space.
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place.
What goes into your quote
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Homes across W3 and their bedrooms
Bedrooms across W3 might have alcoves, sloping ceilings, bulkheads or none of these. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
The biggest shares of homes in the W3 postcode district were built before 1919 (about 46%) and since 2000 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. More than a third of the homes in W3 (about 46%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. A quarter or more of the homes in the W3 postcode district (about 26%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and W3 is part of that. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Acton: Living in a block of flats near Acton Central station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Gala Bingo Club, less than half a mile south of the centre of Acton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
Honest limits
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- The internal fittings
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The width and height of the space
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
What to send when you contact us
These details help when you get in touch:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Your postcode and the borough
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What the furniture needs to hold
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
Doors and drawer fronts
Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through at the design visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do you work in W3?
Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, W3 included.
