Fitted cupboards for homes in Acton Vale
Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about storage in a corner nothing else fits and landing shelves for bedding and towels.
Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Acton Vale, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Acton Vale homes and fitted cupboards
About 49% of the homes in the streets around Acton Vale went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Acton Vale, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Acton Vale is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as St Saviour's Church and Institute, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to St Saviour's Centre for the Deaf, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. Close to Wormholt Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Why bespoke in Acton Vale?
Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. A fitted cupboard is part of the room and is designed for this home. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Why us?
- We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
- Work across the whole of London
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Made for your room, not a standard size

Questions from Acton Vale
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Acton Vale?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
My home in Acton Vale is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.
From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- We start with the space and what you want to store.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim the edge of each cupboard to follow the wall for a close fit.
