Alcove units in Albany Park, Bexley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on alcove units in Albany Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess

Alcove units for your home in Albany Park

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Alcove units in Albany Park: what you get

Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that look as though they belong there. Where a room in Albany Park has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one, starting with a design visit to measure. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about worn or badly fitted alcove units and shelving for books and records.

Concrete floors and ceilings are common in post-war blocks, and they need the right drill and fixings. With many homes around Albany Park dating from the post-war decades, we check the walls during the design visit before alcove units are designed. On a lightweight partition, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Why bespoke in Albany Park?

Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, depending on the room. In a plain post-war room, standalone pieces stand proud of the wall with nothing to frame them, while a fitted run can create its own recesses.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Albany Park?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Albany Park in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes. Albany Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

Electrical work is not something we do. New or moved sockets are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting. We plan the units around the sockets, with cut-outs where needed.

Is it possible to have a desk built into one alcove?

Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. Height and depth are agreed with you, with a route left for cables.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

What affects the price of alcove units?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How fitting works for alcove units

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. We tidy as we go.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
