Belvedere Alcove Units

In Belvedere, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. Your alcove unit is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Alcoves that aren’t square
  • Clutter with nowhere to go

Your questions about alcove units in Belvedere

Do you cover homes near Belvedere station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other, or matching desks in both. We’ll plan the desk around how you work.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what fitting day involves before we start.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Alcove units in Belvedere

Alcove units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. You can have a spray-painted finish from the workshop or a hand-painted one done on site, in a colour agreed with you. Typical reasons to get in touch are toys and paperwork with no proper home and storage that suits a period room, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Wherever your home in Belvedere sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Older rooms bring uneven walls and picture rails, while newer ones bring plasterboard walls and boxed-in pipes. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What affects the price in Belvedere

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

What we don’t do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp
  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Scribed side panels
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short message from you about the alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, including the paint finish.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you’ve picked.
  4. We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. It is easy to touch up later.

Moisture-resistant MDF

In an alcove unit, MDF gives smooth doors and tidy edges, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a chimney breast.

Belvedere homes and alcove units

In the streets around Belvedere, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 26%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Belvedere, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are more common around Belvedere than across Bexley: about 37% of households, against about 21%, the 2021 Census shows. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

Close to Lesnes Abbey Woods? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. The wider area includes historic houses like Red House, about 2.3 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a family home near Lessness Heath Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Belvedere is about 4 miles south-west of Sidcup, in the London Borough of Bexley. Homes in Belvedere are part of the area we cover for alcove units, as part of our work in every London borough. We cover places right across Bexley, large and small.

We cover every part of the DA17, DA8 and DA18 postcode area. If your home is on a street such as Cray Road, Adit Road and Clive Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for alcove units. Neighbouring places we cover for alcove units include Lessness Heath (1 mile west), Erith (1 mile south-east), Northumberland Heath (1 mile south-east), Bexley Riverside (1 mile south-east) and West Heath (1 mile south-west). Other parts of Bexley we cover include Sidcup (4 miles south-west), Welling (3 miles south-west), Bexley (3 miles south), Bexleyheath (2 miles south), Albany Park (5 miles south-west) and Thamesmead (2 miles north-west). Being one of the larger places in Bexley, Belvedere is covered for alcove units and everything else we make.
