Alcove Units in Woodlands
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on alcove units in Woodlands starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Clutter with nowhere to go
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
- Alcoves that are wasted space

Alcove units for homes in Woodlands
Alcove units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen part by part. MDF suits doors and panels because it paints so evenly, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in the colour you choose. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about old alcove cupboards that have seen better days and a desk that tucks into an alcove.
Around Woodlands, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Alcove units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Alcove units in Woodlands: local notes
About 32% of the homes in the streets around Woodlands went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 25% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Woodlands, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. All of London, Hounslow included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Woodlands. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
Close to Inwood Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Gumley House (convent), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Isleworth station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Woodlands is in the London Borough of Hounslow, about 1 mile south-west of Hounslow. Whether your home in Woodlands is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Woodlands is one of 25 places on our list for Hounslow.
Design visits and fitting in TW7 and TW3 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets like Star Road, Pears Road and Unwin Road, along with the roads around them, for alcove units and any of our other fitted furniture. If you’re just outside Woodlands, we also cover Hounslow (1 mile south-west), Isleworth (1 mile east), Spring Grove (1 mile north), Ivybridge (1 mile south) and Lampton (1 mile north-west). Other parts of Hounslow we cover include Feltham (3 miles south-west), Brentford (2 miles north-east), Chiswick (4 miles east), Strand-on-the-Green (3 miles east), Gunnersbury (3 miles north-east) and Hounslow West (2 miles west).
Around Woodlands
We fit furniture in homes around Royal Military School of Music, The George Inn and Gumley House RC Convent School and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Woodlands itself: Isleworth station. Nearby you’ll also find West Middlesex University Hospital (0.7 miles east) and Treaty Centre (1 mile west). For a walk, there is Garden Lake.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
- Check whether there is a vent in the chimney breast
- Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
- Sort out damp patches before fitting
Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.
Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for, so tell us during the design visit if a shelf will hold something heavy.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought units stop at standard heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, depending on the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the units, materials and finish.
- Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- The units are fitted in your home and scribed to follow the walls. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
Preparing the room
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Tell us about parking near your home
Getting a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Common questions about alcove units
Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Woodlands?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Isleworth station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
We plan alcove units so any chimney vent stays clear. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. The height is settled during the design visit.
Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
