Alcove units designed for your room
About our alcove units in Canonbury
A classic layout is a low cupboard with open shelves above. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. We set the heights to suit the room and what you will store. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are standard units leaving gaps at the sides and storage that suits a period room.
Most households around Canonbury live in purpose-built flats, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Alcove units are designed for whichever you have.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.
- You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
- We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- Once you are happy, the units are made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.
Preparing the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Advice
Tips worth knowing
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Check whether there’s a vent in the chimney breast
- Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
- Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
Fill the shelves gradually and spread heavy things evenly. Books weigh more than most people expect, and an even load keeps the shelves straight.
Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for, so mention heavy collections when we plan the unit.

Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Questions from Canonbury
I live near Canonbury station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.
I live in a flat in Canonbury. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Alcove units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?
We don’t do electrical work. New or moved sockets are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting. We can plan cut-outs and cable routes in the units around them.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The units are made in our workshop first.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
It’s up to you. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We discuss the options at the measuring visit.
Living-room carpentry in Canonbury: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Canonbury, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Canonbury, 12 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the streets around Canonbury, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
For a flat near Canonbury station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Rotherfield Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like St Paul's Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, with birch plywood where it is needed. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you’re renting or moving soon. Ready-made units can’t follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Fitted furniture is built around them.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
