Questions from Canonbury

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Canonbury?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London, and Canonbury is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

I live in a flat in Canonbury. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you’ve picked. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Bespoke kitchens in Canonbury: what you get

We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If you are living with room for everything in the kitchen and tall larder storage, that’s what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a block, the pipes and risers in a kitchen are normally fixed in place. Since most households around Canonbury live in purpose-built flats, cabinets are often designed to work around them, keeping access where it’s needed. Plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you are after

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • List what needs a home in the kitchen
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We cannot advise on your lease.

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You tell us about the room and how you use it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Canonbury

Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, leaving gaps at the ends and above. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room instead.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen

For a family home near Rotherfield Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
