TV and media units in Canonbury, Islington

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in Canonbury starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • A screen at the wrong height

About our TV and media units in Canonbury

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Canonbury, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If you’re living with speakers muffled behind doors and standard units leaving gaps, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a flat, one room often does the work of a living room, dining room and study. Around Canonbury, where most households live in purpose-built flats, TV and media units that use the height of the room help keep the floor clear. A shallow run on one wall can hold a lot without taking much floor.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

What prompts TV and media units in Canonbury

Others are tired of furniture that does not fit. Standard TV stands rarely suit an awkward wall, and that’s where a bespoke unit helps.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Nowhere good for speakers

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.7 miles east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.

How fitting works for TV and media units

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the design visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Canonbury station?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Canonbury?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position, with a route for the cables. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket so we check the wall at the design visit.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
