Kingsland Alcove Units
In Kingsland, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. We design your alcove unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
- Space for a growing book collection
Need alcove units in Kingsland?
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Any structural work on the chimney breast
- Making good damaged walls before fitting
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it’s made from
- Birch plywood
- Adjustable shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Scribed side panels
- Panelled or flat doors
- Hand-painted finish
About our alcove units in Kingsland
We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits doors and panels because it paints so evenly, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in the colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are alcoves that aren’t square and units that sit well with original features, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A flat’s living room often has to hold the sofa, the TV, the books and the dining table. Most households around Kingsland live in purpose-built flats, so alcove units that make use of the wall height are worth considering. A shallow run on one wall can hold a lot without taking much floor.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and often the top too. It is what makes a fitted unit look fitted.
Spray-painted finish
Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there’s less painting to do in your home. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf units come in the colours the maker chose. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site. You can match the walls or choose a contrast. Big standalone units don’t always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Living-room carpentry in Kingsland: local notes
About 37% of the homes in the streets around Kingsland went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Kingsland is in the Kingsland Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Kingsland fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Dalston Junction station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your children go to Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Sutton House, about 1.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
Kingsland is within the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south of Shoreditch. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Kingsland included. Across Hackney, we cover Kingsland and the places around it.
In N1, E8 and N16, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as Dove Road, Glebe Road and Ufton Road, along with the roads around them, for alcove units and any of our other fitted furniture. If you’re just outside Kingsland, we also cover De Beauvoir Town (1 mile south-west), Dalston (1 mile east), Mildmay (1 mile north-west), Canonbury (1 mile west) and Newington Green (1 mile north-west). We also make alcove units in nearby places such as Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north-east), Manor House (2 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).

Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square. Then we go through the design together.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
How to get a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
Your questions about alcove units in Kingsland
Can you make alcove units for a home in Kingsland?
Yes, we work across Hackney, Kingsland included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
I live near Dalston Junction station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
That is your choice. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We will go through what suits your room when we visit.
How do I get a quote for alcove units in Kingsland?
Just message us from the contact page. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
