Fitted bedroom furniture in Canonbury
In the neighbourhood around Canonbury, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Canonbury is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Canonbury will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.
If you live near Shoreditch Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as St Paul's Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Paul's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Canonbury is about 1 mile north-west of Highbury, in the London Borough of Islington. Anywhere in Canonbury, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Canonbury is one of the places in Islington where we make fitted wardrobes.
We cover every part of N1, N1P and E8 for fitted wardrobes. Our area takes in homes on streets like Dove Road, Essex Road and Clare Lane, whether you want fitted wardrobes or another piece made for the room. Canonbury is near the A1199 and A1200; on busy main roads, unloading fitted wardrobes takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted wardrobes include De Beauvoir Town (1 mile east), Mildmay (1 mile north-east), Kingsland (1 mile east), Newington Green (1 mile north) and Highbury (1 mile north-west). Elsewhere in Islington, we also cover Farringdon (2 miles south-west), Holloway (2 miles north-west), Upper Holloway (2 miles north-west), Nag's Head (2 miles north-west) and Tufnell Park (2 miles north-west).
What’s near Canonbury
The streets we cover here include those near Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives, City of London Academy Highbury Grove and New Crown pub. There’s a railway station in Canonbury itself: Canonbury station. Well-known places in the area include Hackney Walk (1.6 miles east) and Clowns Gallery-Museum (0.7 miles east). For a walk, there’s Barnsbury Wood.
Fitted wardrobes in Canonbury
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If you’re living with too little room for clothes and wasted space beside the chimney breast, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. Since most households around Canonbury live in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Higher cupboards are best for things you use less often, like spare bedding or suitcases.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Boards, parts and paint
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there is room to open them, hinged doors give full access. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
What affects the price in Canonbury
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking near your home
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What to send when you contact us
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Your postcode and the borough
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
To make a start, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Canonbury
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Canonbury?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
I live in a flat in Canonbury. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
It’s worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
Where other trades come in
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.
