Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

How we make alcove units for Cockfosters

A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help keep damp out of the breast. We keep any vent clear when we design alcove units, rather than boxing it in. If there are signs of damp on the chimney breast or in the alcoves, they’re best sorted before fitting so the new furniture starts on a dry wall. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are room to work in an alcove and storage that suits a period room.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Cockfosters, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for alcove units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish, so you can look it over in your own time.
  4. We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls.

Advice

Common questions about alcove units

Do you make alcove units for homes in Cockfosters?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Cockfosters is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near New Barnet station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

We plan alcove units so any chimney vent stays clear. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away, so we never box a vent in.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

When you need someone else

Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Making good damaged walls before fitting

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What affects the price in Cockfosters

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What to send when you get in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
