Cockfosters Built-in Bookshelves
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Cockfosters, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Shelving that frames a window
- Books with nowhere left to go

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. Typical reasons to get in touch are books piled on the floor and shelves that sag under books; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around Cockfosters is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces that take a painted finish evenly. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
Questions from Cockfosters
Is parking a problem for fitting in Cockfosters?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
Is the furniture made to order?
Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Bespoke is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
- We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
- Once you are happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Cockfosters
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. A bowing shelf is typically too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Low shelves children can reach
- Books with nowhere left to go
If you live in a flat close to New Barnet station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
What to check before you book
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
