Cockfosters TV and Media Units
In Cockfosters, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

How we price TV and media units
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- Parking near your home
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The number of doors and drawers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Getting in touch
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Examples of the look you are after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
About our TV and media units in Cockfosters
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit so the sockets land in the right place. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are nowhere good for speakers and equipment with nowhere proper to go.
Around Cockfosters, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where TV and media units work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about TV and media units
Is Cockfosters in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Cockfosters is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Do you cover homes near New Barnet station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it is in, don’t block the gaps.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Cockfosters homes and TV and media units
In the area around Cockfosters, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Cockfosters, Historic England’s list includes Front Lodge at Trent Park (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and The Abbey Church of Christ the King (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 31% of homes in the streets around Cockfosters were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so TV and media units often run along a full wall, with fixings chosen for the wall.
If your children go to Trent CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Belmont Open Space, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For an older house near Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
- A written quote follows for the unit.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice
How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and top. It makes the unit look built in.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain to show through, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
