Alcove Units in Cranford
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on alcove units in Cranford starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Alcoves that aren’t square
- Units that sit well with original features
Alcove units for your home in Cranford
How we make alcove units for Cranford
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting so the units feel part of the room. These details are settled when we visit, before anything is made. People usually come to us about alcoves that are wasted space and everyday clutter left on show; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Cranford, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan alcove units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.
Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are the edges we trim on site to follow the wall. This closes the gap between a straight unit and a bowed alcove.
Shelves
We set shelf spacing around what you own so tall books and records have room. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
What prompts alcove units in Cranford
In bedrooms, the alcoves may be the only place for hanging space. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor, which matters in a smaller room.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- Alcoves that aren’t square
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
- Tired cupboards in the alcoves
- Everyday clutter left on show
If you live in a period home close to The Parish Church of the Good Shepherd, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Your questions about alcove units in Cranford
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hayes & Harlington station?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cranford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
How long are you in the house for the fitting?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The units are made at our workshop first, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.
How fitting works for alcove units
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind.
- We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design.
- We send a written quote for the units, so you can look it over in your own time.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Ask for a quote
To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Living-room carpentry in Cranford: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Cranford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Cranford is within about a quarter of a mile of the Cranford Park Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Cranford (about 35%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so alcove units often run along a full wall, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.
