Alcove units in Hatton

Alcove units in Hatton: what you get

We work across London, including Hatton. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you’re happy the units are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are alcoves that are wasted space and tired cupboards in the alcoves.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Hatton, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Alcove units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Built-in living-room furniture in Hatton

In the neighbourhood around Hatton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hatton include Green Man Public House (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 46% of households in the area around Hatton, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your children go to Cranford Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. For an older house near The Parish Church of the Good Shepherd, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Heathrow Terminal 4 Rail station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store

To clean painted units, a soft cloth that’s barely damp is enough. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, which can dull or mark the paint. Dry the surface afterwards.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units, as strong heat can mark paint over time.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and talk through the design, including the paint finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
  4. We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that is done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The units are fitted and scribed to the alcoves.
  6. New paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat the surfaces gently at first.

How to prepare

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Questions from Hatton

Do you cover homes near Heathrow Terminal 4 Rail station?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hatton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

The fitting depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what to expect before we arrive.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood helps shelves stay straight under books across a broad recess. We size the shelf for the span and the load.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits alcove units in a period room. You choose the colour, and it is easy to refresh in years to come.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
