Bespoke kitchens for homes in Denmark Hill

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are more storage in a small kitchen and spaces sized for your oven and fridge.

In a flat, the kitchen often opens onto the living room, so it has to look like furniture as much as a kitchen, so the look of the cabinets matters as much as what they hold. Around Denmark Hill, most households are in purpose-built flats. A tall unit or panel at the end of the run can link the kitchen to the living space.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, use our contact form.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Wipe up spills promptly
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. It is worth keeping a record of the colours used.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We can’t advise on your lease.

Kitchens in Denmark Hill: local notes

About 36% of the homes in the area around Denmark Hill went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 94 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Denmark Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. About 61% of households in the streets around Denmark Hill live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in Denmark Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is Denmark Hill in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and Denmark Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How much time does fitting need?

How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • Extra cupboard space
  • Tall larder storage
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose

If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthew's Camberwell, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.
