Fitted Wardrobes in Denmark Hill

Planning fitted wardrobes for a home in Denmark Hill? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Too little room for clothes

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Denmark Hill

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

About our fitted wardrobes in Denmark Hill

Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. If you’re living with empty alcoves in the bedroom and no space in front for doors to swing, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Denmark Hill, and many blocks have rules about using the lift and when work can happen. It helps to check those with the managing agent before fitting day. A leasehold flat may need consent for fixing to walls, so check your lease first.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work isn’t as quick as buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making. Standard furniture doesn’t allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, leaving gaps or blocking access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front, depending on the look you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Denmark Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Denmark Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It is common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Bedrooms in Denmark Hill: local notes

About 36% of the homes in the streets around Denmark Hill went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Denmark Hill is partly covered by the Camberwell Grove Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Purpose-built flats are home to about 61% of households in the neighbourhood around Denmark Hill, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Giles, less than half a mile north of the centre of Denmark Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near Lyndhurst Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
