Ask about under-stairs storage in Denmark Hill
From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice
Under-stairs storage in Denmark Hill: what you get
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Denmark Hill and fitted. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are storage that doesn’t match the hallway and coats and shoes piling up in the hall.
Most homes around Denmark Hill are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Flats, leases and landlords
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Is bespoke worth it?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners, leaving more floor clear.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Under-stairs storage in Denmark Hill: local notes
In the area around Denmark Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 94 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Denmark Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That usually means a van in Denmark Hill needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
For a family home near Lyndhurst Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthew's Camberwell, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Denmark Hill
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Denmark Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
When is bespoke worth it?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
