Fitted wardrobes in SE24: how it works

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What affects the price in SE24

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SE24

SE24 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

The biggest shares of homes in SE24 were built before 1919 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 45% of homes in the SE24 postcode district were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the SE24 postcode district, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

SE24 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you contact us.

Herne Hill: The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles south. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Belair Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Materials and finishes

Hanging rails

Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Higher space above can hold shelves for things you use less.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.

Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. A little ventilation in the room helps.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in SE24

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or may not make it up the stairs. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in SE24

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop before we come to fit them.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
